I write The Velvet Paw of Asquith novels, and in doing so, I’m introduced to a world. Part of experiencing that world comes through my other creative pursuits. The way I see it in my mind’s eye while writing is expressed through various artistic avenues—one of which is music.

I compose music in response to what I see, but also as a conduit to bring that world forth. Writing is an immersive pursuit, and I find it enriched when I allow it to flow through every medium available to me. If I don’t write music, I don’t experience the world as fully as I could. By composing music, I see it in more vivid colors, which, in turn, makes it easier to translate into words. At the same time, writing the words allows me to feel the music.

I suspect that creative immersion can manifest through multiple artistic pursuits. In my case, this tends to be books, music, and the extraction of artwork—each equally important. In this way, I feel as though I’m experiencing and expressing The Velvet Paw of Asquith story world through sound, word, and vision. I can’t think of a better, more respectful, or more fitting way to honor the world of these books than by celebrating it through a myriad of artistic expressions.

I believe that anyone who writes novels is also, in some way, a musician or composer, just as any composer is also a storyteller. Any artist is an artist across all forms—we simply have different tendencies in how we choose to express it.
